Oral History

The Steamboat Era Museum Oral History Center

"We are who we are because steamboats were."

One of the more exciting methods for preserving the past is the use of the video technology. Video equipment-camcorders, computer-based non-linear editing systems, DVD duplication and playback units-are increasingly affordable and easy to use. The Steamboat Era Museum Oral History Center has been established to take advantage of the new electronic tools.

We capture stories about the Steamboat Era by interviewing eyewitnesses, as well as 1st and 2nd generation sources. Often we create programming that incorporates these stories with supporting visuals such as photographs, artwork, film, and video images from both the past and the present. These video-based interviews and edited programs are used to support the museum's various exhibits and outreach projects, and to provide resources for educational, historical, and genealogical research projects.

Oral History Center Activities

In addition to our video-based archiving activities, the Oral History Center sponsors a number of workshops designed to train participants in the effective use of camcorders and editing equipment. We also teach techniques for interviewing, logging, and indexing oral history footage. For more information contact the Museum or check our Calendar of Events.

Want to Participate?
If you are interested in any or all of the aspects of oral history please let us know. Also, if you know a Steamboat Era eyewitness who would like to be interviewed please contact us. We are also interested in 1st and 2nd generation stories and artifacts that ancestors passed down or documented.

The oral history project has been supported through funding from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the Scott Opler Fund.
